He could have given his collections to anybody. UT Austin or TCU would have been logical choices. His decision to give his collections to UTA in the 1970s turned
Special Collections into the University's "crown jewels." That initial donation subsequently attracted much more. As an example, encouraged by Mr. Garrett, we stole the
Fort Worth Star-Telegram archives (among other thing) out from under TCU, because we had the knowledge and resources and had, by that time, established a critical mass and reputation.
There no doubt that Jenkins Garrett was the single most important philanthropist in the University's history. A price tag would not do justice to his legacy at UTA, but, if you could put a price on it, it would obviously be worth millions.
